Spring Breeze Tea Ceremony at J-collabo

I held a "Spring Breeze Tea Ceremony" with J-collabo in Brooklyn, New York.

This building was built in the 1850s, right around the time of Perry's arrival to Japan. I was asked to renovate one of the rooms to create a space where we could enjoy tea and have a tea ceremony. I tried to keep the atmosphere of Brooklyn, but not too Japanese.

For the floor, I used sliding doors in the style of Oribe-toko織部床. An old bench from the building is placed in the foreground.

At the entrance, I made and installed a Hengaku扁額. Unlike the tea ceremony room, the Hengaku, which is the face of the room, was made in accordance with tradition. 

The sweets were cherry blossom rice cakes, followed by a cup of matcha.

(Due to the corona disaster, we did not place a saucer of purified water as a decoration.

The occasional fluttering of the scrolls in the wind blowing through the buildings added to the atmosphere of the spring breeze tea ceremony.

ニューヨーク・ブルックリンにあるJ-collaboさんと一緒に「春風茶会」を開催しました。

この建物は1850年代に建てられたものだそうで、ちょうどペリーが来航した頃からあるものです。この度その一室を改装し、お茶が楽しめる空間を作り、お茶会をという話をいただきました。ブルックリンの風情を生かせられるように、あまり日本式にしすぎない雰囲気でまとめてみました。

床は、スライド式の扉を織部床風に。手前にビル内にあった古いベンチを置いています。

入口には扁額を作成し設置しました。茶室とは違い、顔となる扁額は伝統に沿ったものにしました。その下にアンティークの鉢？を蹲に見立てています。（コロナ禍のため飾りとし、清めた水の受け皿は置いていません）

お菓子は桜餅、その後お茶を一服の流れです。

一席10名を二席行いましたが、満席となり喜んでおります。

時折、ビルを抜ける風で軸がなびくのが春風茶会の風情を高めてくれました。
